El Gran Casino de El Sardinero se alza majestuoso en la Plaza de Italia, habiéndose convertido ya, en sus cien años de historia, en todo un referente de la ciudad de Santander. Sin embargo, este bello edificio que hoy contemplamos no fue el primero en ostentar el título de casino de la ciudad: antes de que se construyera en 1916, hubo en este mismo emplazamiento otros dos precedentes. En cualquier caso, la institución del Casino, con sus respectivas sedes, ha sido siempre el centro de la vida social santanderina, sobre todo durante la temporada estival, marcando fuertemente el desarrollo de El Sardinero como lugar de veraneo de los santanderinos, foráneos e incluso, hasta entrado el siglo XX, de la Corte. Repasando brevemente la historia de sus distintas fases, nos encontramos con un primer edificio construido en 1870, al que, poco después de su cierre, sigue una segunda construcción datada en 1901, siendo la que actualmente contemplamos de 1916.
