The rush was intoxicating, the thrill of each flip of the card sending adrenaline coursing through his veins. “Double down,” he said, pushing a stack of chips forward with a confidence that belied the pounding of his heart. The dealer’s eyes flickered with a hint of surprise, but she dealt the card without hesitation. A ten. Perfect. The collective gasp of the onlookers was music to his ears as he raked in another substantial win. Hours passed like minutes. The world outside ceased to exist as Brettski rode the wave of luck, each hand raising the stakes higher and higher. By now, he was playing with house money, his original $2,000 having multiplied beyond his wildest dreams. But just as quickly as the luck had turned in his favor, it began to slip away. A loss here, a bad beat there, and the doubt began to creep in. His stack was shrinking, and the sense of invincibility was fading. He knew he should walk away, take what he had, and call it a night, but the lure of one more hand, one more win, was too strong to resist. “Last hand,” he muttered, more to himself than anyone else, as he pushed his remaining chips into the center of the table. The cards were dealt, and he held his breath as he flipped them over. A king and a queen. Twenty. A solid hand, but not unbeatable. The dealer’s face was unreadable as she revealed her own cards. An ace. She paused, then slowly turned over the next card. A jack. Brettski's heart stopped as he stared at the table. Blackjack. The dealer had won. He had lost everything. The room spun, the sounds of the casino crashing back in as reality hit him like a freight train. But then, a hand on his shoulder. He turned, expecting to see a pit boss or a concerned friend, but instead, it was a man he’d never seen before, his eyes glinting with a strange mix of pity and amusement. “Care for another shot?” the stranger asked, holding up a single, glittering chip.
